Configuring Apple Mail

Set up Mail on Apple OS X

If you don't have Mail on your dock, you can open Mail using the Spotlight tool. Click on the magnifying glass icon on the top right hand corner and search for "mail". You will notice that OSX will narrow down anything related to the word "mail", including the application we need, you can click on Mail or press Enter if the Mail application was your Top Hit.

Have Another Mail Account Already Set Up?

If this is the first Mail account you are setting up with Apple's Mail software, then you can start with the Set Up Process. If you have another account setup in Apple Mail, while Mail is open, go to
Mail->Preferences->Accounts.

Within Preferences, click the Accounts button.
On the bottom left hand side, you will see a + sign. Click the + symbol to add your lifesci or other mail accounts.

Select the Google option, then click Continue.
Enter YourUCSBNetID@ucsb.edu as the email address, and click next.
Enter your UCSBNetID password, and click next again. At this point, if you have Dual-Factor authentication enabled, you will need to accept the authentication through your dual-factor app.
Check the boxes for the items you would like to Sync. Most users will likely want Contacts and Calendars as well as Mail. Click Done to complete.
The Accounts pane will re-open. You may rename your Account int he "Description" tab if you would like.
Click the Email Address: box, and select Edit Email Addresses...
Click your UCSBNetID address and remove it by clicking the - button. Then click the + button and add both your name in the left box and your departmental email address in the right box. If you wish to use your UCSBNetID@ucsb.edu address, or you have other departmental addresses that you'd like to send mail from, you can add them here below your primary departmental address. Click OK to go back to the settings page when you are done.
Click the Mailbox Behaviors tab
Select the "Drafts Mailbox:" drop-down menu, and choose the Drafts folder inside the [Gmail] folder.
Select the "Sent Mailbox:" drop-down menu, and choose the Sent Mail folder inside the [Gmail] folder.
Select the "Junk Mailbox:" drop-down menu, and choose the Spam folder inside the [Gmail] folder.
Select the "Trash Mailbox:" drop-down menu, and choose the Trash folder inside the [Gmail] folder.
Select the "Archive Mailbox:" drop-down menu, and choose the All Mail folder inside the [Gmail] folder. Your email setup is now complete. You may chose to set up a signature at this time, change other settings, or close this settings window.
