Restoring Backups from Lifesci-Filer

The Lifesci-Filer storage service features a robust backup system that saves multiple versions of all data stored on it. These "snapshots" are taken multiple times daily, with previous versions stored at key intervals of hours, days, and weeks in the past. Should a file be lost from Lifesci-Filer, it can be easily restored by any user with permissions for that directory. In addition to restoring files that have been deleted, this feature can be used to revert to previous versions of saved files as well. Restorations can take place for individual files, groups of files, or entire folders. There are a few ways in which files or folders can be restored.

From a Windows Computer

  1. Open the directory in which the file or folder to be restored resides. For example, if restoring the file \\lifesci-filer\labname\example\temp.txt, navigate to \\lifesci-filer\labname\example. If you would like to restore the entire "example" folder, navigate to the "labname" folder.
  2. Right click on a blank space inside the folder, and select "Properties".
  3. From the Properties window, select the "Previous Versions" tab.
  4. Select the version of the file that you would like to revert to. There are a few options from which to move forward, depending on how you would like to restore files:
    • To view the file or contents of the folder, click "open". You can then manually open or copy any files to your desired location.
    • To restore the file or entire folder to a new location, click the "Copy" button and then paste the file/folder in the desired location.
    • To immediately restore the file or the entire folder back to its original location, press "restore".

From any Operating System

  1. Open the directory in which the file or folder to be restored resides. For example, if restoring the file \\lifesci-filer\labname\example\temp.txt, navigate to \\lifesci-filer\labname\example. If you would like to restore the entire "example" folder, navigate to the "labname" folder.
  2. Navigate to the hidden ".snapshot" folder. This is most easily done by adding ".snapshot" to the end of the current directory name. For example: \\lifesci-filer\labname\example\.snapshot
  3. Navigate to the version of the file that you would like to revert to. Files are saved in "hourly.x", "nightly.x", and "weekly.x" folders. "hourly.0" is the most recent snapshot, "hourly.1" is up to 0-1 hour old, "hourly.2" is 1-2 hours old, "nightly.6" is 5-6 days old, and so on.
  4. After finding the files that you would like to restore, copy and paste them to your desired location.
